The average day consists of many decisions, some more complex than others. As mathematicians, we already understand the concepts of predicting, evaluating and formulating. We prepare for the unknown and plan for the unimaginable. We weigh possibilities and calculate crude probabilities. Mathematicians innately have interests to such scenarios and problems. We are thinkers unlike any other. Unlike other fields, pure mathematicians study concepts that are entirely abstract. Being a math major invites problems to be solved with higher degree of uniqueness.
It’s up to mathematicians to make the lives of everyone else easier. Technology is advancing inconceivably fast. A system called Boolean logic which is rooted with mathematical principles is used in devices to make logical systems. A self-driven car uses Boolean algebra and Boolean logic, decisions on how to navigate are calculated from digital cameras. The release of a book only happens after math is involved, customer feedback and statistical surveys which require math predict when they will be profitable. Businesses thrive off of computer software’s and other task handling operations. Technology cannot come up with new ideas, like mathematicians can.
Our qualities vary between mathematicians, but a few traits that consistent throughout are patience, persistence, and creativity. For a writer, the difference between “an” and “a” Is important but a reader may subconsciously read it correctly whether the mistake is there or not. The difference between 1000 and -1000 is absolutely 2000. There is no boundary on time when it comes to figuring out why a problem is not working. We will go through the problem many times to find the outlier and remove or fix it. Having an unbounded mind removes the idea of ordinary and creates the understood concept of extraordinary. Any setting with a mathematician apart of it will lead to prosperous and new ideas.
The love for math and its way of thinking is projected into the work that I do. No problem is left unsolved, being that numerical or a real-world application. Mathematicians analyze a situation, describe what it is we are trying to accomplish and evaluate it. Once that is done, we compare it to previous situations, infer what you can to help reach a conclusion, support our thoughts with known facts to formulate a plan. Finally, execute with mathematical precision. These steps come naturally to us mathematicians, which is why we think the way we do. A mind guided by math is a mind well utilized.
